Deutsche Post Towers Wins CTBUH 10 Year Award

Deutsche Post Towers in Bonn Germany has received the 10 Year Award from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). Completed in 2002 and designed by Murphy/Jahn, Post Tower was a leader in introducing high performance design elements to create a more efficient and pleasant office environment, and has now been recognized by this unique award which rewards proven value and performance in a tall building over a period of 10 years since its completion, and offers a valuable look at the life of buildings long after the initial designs are realized. Distinguished by two elliptical volumes that wrap around a central atrium space, the form works to minimize negative wind effects and dictate views. It features a double skin with an operable façade to facilitate ventilation, and eschews the need for mechanical ventilation equipment often seen in large buildings. This smart design choice allows the building to consume 79 percent less energy per year, and adds the additional benefit of pleasant interior sky garden spaces.

Awards Jury Chair Jeanne Gang, founding principal of Studio Gang Architects, describes the tower as “an early touchstone for sustainable tower design.” The building itself serves as a model for the sustainable high-rise typology, with Awards juror and managing director of OMA David Gianotten explaining that "the design single-handedly changed the way we look at façade and office design to date. It has become an exemplar sustainable icon in contemporary architecture.”

Francisco Gonzalez-Pulido, President of JAHN, Dr. Hans-Dieter Petram, former Member of the Board of Deutsche Post DHL and Mr. Marvin Larger, Head of Corporate Real Estate Americas, accepted the award last night at the CTBUH Annual Awards Symposium at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago.
